You are in the meeting, and your boss says to you,”I’m sorry, but we don’t have it in our budget to increase your salary this year…maybe next.”
Before you decide to break out into a full panic mode, know that there are 11 things to negotiate for other than salary, which could be worth more to you than the salary itself.
Negotiation is a skill that you must learn in life. Anyone who has “made it” in life has learned how to be a really good negotiator. That doesn’t mean that you are a pain in the butt, but just that you are smart and know what to negotiate for, and when you’ve gotten a good deal. If you aren’t comfy with negotiation, I suggest that you practice that skill in little ways every day until you feel more comfortable to move onto the big leagues of negotiation.
Some of my favorite things to negotiate for other than salary are:
1. Extra vacation time – how much would you love an extra paid week off to spend time with friends and family…or maybe take that solo trip to Europe?
2. Wardrobe allowance – do you network for your job? Do you go to conferences, or are you on camera? A wardrobe allowance can allow you to look great on someone else’s dime.
3. Education – have you been jonesing to get your master’s degree, or maybe go to a cool new conference? Companies love to fund education costs, but most people don’t even ask. Make sure you have all your details handy before you approach your boss, and be sure to explain how this could help you grow in your career.
There are lots of other things to negotiate for, but you’ll just need to listen to the podcast to learn about those. Have a good one that we don’t have in the list? Leave me a comment and let me know what you’ve negotiated for in the past.
